The Last Drag

An old man in a Dhaka topi takes a quiet smoke, eyes nearly closed. The cold morning light and curling haze are built from layered grey washes and lifted highlights.

03The Artist

It started with tiny stickers and a brother to beat.

At seven or eight, Kobit Gurung was hunched over anime stickers with his brother, racing to see who could copy the characters more faithfully. It was never homework β€” it was a dare, a game, a quiet obsession that refused to stay quiet.

As the years passed, the stickers gave way to sketchbooks, and the kitchen-table rivalry grew into something larger. He began representing his school in district-level competitions, discovering that the thing he did for fun was also the thing he did best.

β€œSketching, drawing, painting β€” I never chose this path. It simply never let me choose another.

No academy shaped his hand. The passion came first, and the craft followed β€” built one line, one wash, one late night at a time. Today, from a studio in Pokhara, that same childhood impulse drives every brushstroke: the pure, stubborn love of making marks on paper.

05The Process

How a wash
becomes a world

01 / 04
  1. 01

    The Paper

Every painting begins with cold-pressed cotton rag, torn by hand and stretched the night before. The tooth of the paper decides how the water will move.

  2. 02

    First Wash

Working wet-into-wet, the largest shapes go down first β€” sky, distance, shadow β€” in a single uninterrupted breath before the paper dries.

  3. 03

    Building Light

Layer over transparent layer, the light is never added β€” it is the paper, protected. Each glaze is a decision that cannot be taken back.

  4. 04

    The Detail

Only at the end, with a near-dry brush, do the eyes, the stitch, the single blade of grass arrive. Restraint is the whole discipline.

06About Us

Duluwa Art Gallery

Duluwa Art is the home of Kobit Gurung's watercolour and sketch practice β€” a small gallery rooted in the lake city of Pokhara, Nepal. What began as a single table by a window has grown into six collections and over a hundred original works that travel the world.

We believe art should carry the quiet truth of the place it was made. Every piece here begins with handmade paper, clean water, and the light of the Himalayan morning. No prints, no reproductions β€” only originals painted in the artist's own hand.

β—Œ
